Practical Information

Getting Around

This itinerary requires a private 4x4 safari vehicle with a driver/guide for the entire circuit (Kampala-Bwindi-Queen-Jinja-Entebbe). This is the most practical and safe mode for covering long distances, navigating park roads, and providing wildlife commentary. Domestic flights can shortcut travel to Bwindi but are more expensive. Within cities, trusted taxi apps like SafeBoda (motorcycle) or Uber are useful.

Book Ahead

MOUNTAIN GORILLA PERMITS ($800 each) must be secured 6-12 months in advance through a licensed tour operator. Also pre-book your main safari lodges, in Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth, and your driver/guide service. White-water rafting in Jinja can be booked a few weeks ahead.

Packing Essentials

Waterproof hiking boots for gorilla trekking, gardening gloves, rain jacket, warm layers for Bwindi evenings, binoculars, high-DEET insect repellent, sunscreen, power adapter (UK Type G), reusable water bottle, quick-dry clothing, and a quality camera with zoom lens.

Total Budget

$2,500 - $4,500 per person (excluding international flights, but INCLUDING the $800 gorilla permit). Cost varies dramatically based on accommodation level, private vs group tour, and time of year.

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in budget tented camps or community rest camps near Bwindi and QENP. Use a shared group safari to split vehicle costs. Skip the Kyambura chimp trek and some paid activities in Jinja. Focus on included game drives and the essential gorilla trek. Self-drive is possible for the confident but not recommended for first-timers. Budget $1,800-$2,500.

Luxury Upgrade

Upgrade to ultra-luxury lodges like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Bwindi and Kyambura Gorge Lodge in QENP. Charter domestic flights between destinations to save time. Add exclusive experiences like a private guided gorilla habituation experience ($1500 permit) or a hot air balloon safari over Queen Elizabeth National Park. Budget $7,000+.

Family-Friendly

For families with older children (15+), the itinerary works well. For younger kids, replace gorilla trekking (minimum age 15) with a gorilla habituation experience (age 12+) or a visit to the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary from Entebbe. In Jinja, opt for family-friendly Nile activities like gentle boat cruises, horseback riding, or the source visit instead of intense rafting.
